This edition of WelCom celebrates the appointment of Bishop-elect John Adams of the Diocese of Christchurch. I join with all in the Archdiocese of Wellington and our brothers and sisters in the Diocese of Palmerston North in giving thanks for this appointment.
This month WelCom visits Holy Trinity Parish in Wellington’s eastern suburbs. The pastoral area encompasses hill and beachside suburbs including Kilbirnie, Miramar, Seatoun and Strathmore.

Archbishop Paul Martin sm was installed as Archbishop of Wellington in a special Mass on Saturday 17 June at St Teresa’s Pro-Cathedral in Karori.
Cardinal John Dew, the Catholic Archbishop of Wellington since 2005, has retired on reaching his 75th birthday.
Pope Francis accepted Cardinal John’s formal resignation as Archbishop of Wellington and made the announcement at noon in Rome on 5 May – 10pm in New Zealand – coinciding with Cardinal John’s 75th birthday.

It is my privilege to be writing this first piece for WelCom as the 8th ordinary of the Archdiocese of Wellington.
Sacred Heart College, Lower Hutt, and St Patrick’s College, Silverstream, are joint winners of this year’s O’Shea Shield competition.
The O’Shea Shield Speech and Drama Competition is an annual event, which sees young people from 17 Catholic secondary schools throughout Wellington archdiocese and Palmerston North diocese gather to compete in a variety of speech and drama events over two days.

When Cyclone Gabrielle’s devastating floods tore through properties and homes across many parts of the North Island on 14 February, thousands of people were left homeless or with badly-damaged houses and properties, and ruined personal possessions. Among the most treasured but damaged personal items for some were their precious family Bibles, which had been passed down through generations. Within days a number of people were in contact with Bill Tito, master craftsman and book-repair specialist, asking for his help to mend and restore their rescued but near-ruined Bibles.
