Archbishop John Dew has confirmed his continuation as the patron of one of Wellington’s most successful Catholic sports clubs, the Marist-St Pats Rugby Club. Together with the club’s chaplain, Fr Geoff Broad of St Francis de Sales, Island Bay, the two help to ensure that all those involved with sporting teams ‘¬ø¬Ωldquo; coaches, managers, players and supporters ‘¬ø¬Ωldquo; reflect the club’s Catholic ethos.
To follow Jesus in humbling herself as a servant in order to make herself available to the sick and suffering was the exhortation from Archbishop John Dew as he welcomed Wellington’s first lay hospital chaplain to her new ministry at the end of March. Launch Out graduate Margaret Luping was commissioned amid family, friends and colleagues in St Anne’s Church, Newtown, to work as part of the chaplaincy team at Wellington Hospital.

Organisers of centenary celebrations for an historic Marlborough church are hoping for better weather at the start of the Renwick church’s second centenary. The church of St Francis de Sales, Renwick, was opened by the son of one of Marlborough’s early settlers, Archbishop Francis Redwood SM, on 10 May 1907. A writer of the day said the opening coincided with extremely bad weather.

The group was the result of a Caritas initiative highlighting mental illness in our community and the problems associated with it especially the need to feel part of the parish community. St Joseph’s Peace and Justice group offered to support such a group. From a small beginning, leaders emerged, a programme was undertaken and up to 15 members meet once a fortnight to listen to speakers or discuss issues that meet members’ emotional and spiritual needs.
Two parishes, St Francis de Sales, Island Bay, and St Francis of Assisi, Stoke, Nelson, invited members of other Church communities in their areas to join them on the walk and for drinks and hot cross buns afterwards.
