WelCom is the monthly newspaper of the Archdiocese of Wellington. Print copies of the eight-page newsletter are free and available in parishes, and sent to parishes and schools in PDF form. The archive contains WelCom stories published from 2007 to 2026 (May).
In choosing journalism, Raphaela Fischer set out to understand ‘the slanted and inadequate media coverage’. She had just spent valuable months learning how to present all facets of an issue in ways that would attract and challenge readers. Her research had uncovered areas where the media had reported only some of the facts of an issue.
‘I hated journalists then. Because, had Dad not been German, he would probably not have had any media coverage and just faded into history as a mere, nameless, faceless statistic in the mounting death toll of the Palestinians that was barely covered. This fact infuriated me. My privacy was a price I was willing to pay for the people needed to read about it. The world was entitled to the truth about what was happening on Palestinian grounds.’
The rest of the amazingly rich and diverse history that contributed so much to church spirituality, theology, politics and art, was scattered through magazines, papers and specialist books. It was time for a general history of the Franciscan movement.
